FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How long will you take care of my home?

My stewardship engagements begin at two weeks and can extend through an entire season and beyond. I particularly enjoy longer periods of care because they give me time to learn a property—its routines, systems, vendors, seasonal needs, and the little things that are unique to every home.

Where do you offer your home caretaking services?

I'm open to opportunities throughout the U.S. and abroad.

What kinds of homes and homeowners are the best fit?

I primarily work with owners of well-appointed second homes, vacation properties, and primary residences in desirable communities who place a high value on knowing their home is genuinely cared for while they're away.

This service is particularly well suited to distinctive properties where there may be more to oversee—from household systems and vehicles to gardens, vendors, deliveries, and seasonal maintenance.

Ultimately, the best fit is a home in which the owner values trust, attentiveness, discretion, and thoughtful stewardship.

How much do you charge for your services?

My weekly fee is based primarily on the size of your home, beginning at $600 per week for homes under 1,000 square feet and increasing gradually for larger properties.

The fee reflects the responsibility I take on while you're away—not simply the time I spend completing individual tasks. I'm living in and keeping watch over your home, staying attentive to its condition and needs, coordinating maintenance and vendors, handling issues as they arise, and making sure the property remains well cared for throughout your absence.

Every arrangement also must include private accommodations in the home or on the property, separate from the weekly fee.

You can find the complete pricing structure, along with details about longer stays, pet care, and what's included, on my Rates page.

What happens if something goes wrong while I'm away?

The short answer is: I handle it.

First, I assess what's happening, determine how urgent it is, and take whatever immediate action is necessary to protect your home and prevent the problem from becoming worse. I keep you informed along the way and involve you whenever a decision genuinely requires your input.

Once assessed, I research the appropriate solution, evaluate options, coordinate and supervise qualified vendors when needed, and follow the issue through until it's resolved.

My belief is, you shouldn't have to manage a problem at your home from hundreds or thousands of miles away.

How will I know what's happening at my property while I’m away?

We'll agree on a communication rhythm before you leave.

For most homeowners, that means regular updates along with photos when useful, plus immediate communication when something significant requires attention. I don't want you wondering what's happening at home, but I also don't believe you should have to spend your time away managing me.

My goal is to keep you appropriately informed without creating more work for you.

What happens if the arrangement isn't working or I need to return home early?

Plans change. If you need to return earlier than expected, we'll work through the transition together.

And if either of us feels the arrangement isn't working as intended, I'd rather address it directly and early. Clear communication is part of the arrangement from the beginning.

Why do you look after other people's homes?

Because this arrangement works unusually well for the kind of life I lead and the kind of work I enjoy.

I genuinely like caring for a property, learning its rhythms, solving the problems that arise, and leaving it in excellent shape for its owner's return.

On top of that, I have flexibility about where I live and how I lead my life, which allows me to spend extended periods caring for homes in places I enjoy. In return, homeowners have someone actually living in their home who takes genuine responsibility for it while they're away.

What exactly will you take responsibility for?

The details depend on your home, but broadly: I take responsibility for the property and the things required to keep it running properly while you're away.

That can include routine property checks, preventative maintenance, vendor coordination and supervision, repairs, deliveries, mail, gardens and exterior areas, vehicles, household systems, return preparation, and responding to unexpected problems.

Before every stay, we'll go through your property together and clearly establish what I'm responsible for.

Will you look after my pets?

For engagements of up to one month, I will happily be caretaker and companion to your pets.

Animals all have uniquely wonderful personalities, and my approach to caretaking pets is that I adjust to their rhythms. If you have an active dog or cat, there will be plenty of play time. If they're more mellow, we'll enjoy quiet downtime together.

I'm experienced with dogs, cats, and other animals and am comfortable with feeding routines, walks, medications, homemade meals, and the day-to-day companionship that pets need while their people are away. I'll also handle any emergencies that arise, inluding unexpected trips to the veterinarian or animal hospital.

For longer or seasonal engagements, my work is focused primarily on the home and property.

How do I know I can trust you in my home?

Trust is something I expect to earn.

I have years of private-home experience, references from homeowners I've cared for, a clean driving record, dedicated property stewardship insurance, and a background check available upon request.

Just as importantly, I believe trust comes from how I conduct myself when you're away: respecting your privacy, communicating clearly, exercising good judgment, following through on what I say I'll do, and letting you know when something deserves your attention.

Are you insured?

Yes. I carry dedicated house stewardship liability insurance, along with an additional layer of protection while I'm responsible for your home.

Coverage includes third-party bodily injury and property damage, defense costs, and claims arising from professional errors or negligence. I'm happy to provide a current Certificate of Insurance and applicable coverage details before a stewardship engagement begins.

How much privacy will I have while you're living in my home?

Your home remains your private space.

I use only the areas we agree upon beforehand and treat your belongings, personal spaces, and household routines with discretion and respect. If there are rooms, belongings, or areas you'd prefer remain untouched, we'll establish that before the stewardship engagement begins.

Will you have guests in my home?

Not without your permission.

Your expectations regarding visitors will be discussed before the stewardship engagement, and whatever boundaries we establish are the boundaries I'll follow.

WHAT HOMEOWNERS SAY

"Shane was exactly the kind of caretaker we needed. He was self-directed and reliable, keeping an eye on the house through the winter, and taking care of the many small things required to keep an older property functioning well."

— DAN
WILLIAMSTOWN, MA

"I was amazed by how well Shane kept everything up. Hard to admit, but he was probably more attentive to the place than I am. Having someone this attentive living at the property made a real difference. We will be inviting him back."

— ALEX
OLD SAN JUAN, PR

"What gives me the most confidence in Shane is that he has real experience doing this work. He is vigilant and understands how to maintain a property day to day. Every time we go away, I know our house, garden and dogs are in capable hands."

— AMY
STONY BROOK, NY
