Managing the Ecosystem of Your Home

Every home has its own rhythms. The systems that need watching. The people who know the property well. The little quirks you only learn by spending time there. And the things that tend to need attention as one season gives way to another.

When I’m responsible for a home, I make a point of learning those things. They make up what I call the Ecosystem of a Home.

I keep track of what needs attention, stay in communication with the people who maintain the property, and notice changes before they have a chance to become larger problems. When something does come up, I’m comfortable figuring out what happened, researching the options, bringing in the right person when necessary, and seeing the work through.

I’ve always been someone who enjoys keeping many moving pieces organized and making sure nothing gets lost between them. Caring for a home gives that instinct somewhere useful to go.

Years of Caring for Homes in a Multitude of Landscapes

My experience caring for homes has taken many forms over the years—from managing a private residence in New York City for five years, to looking after seasonal homes, gardens and pools in the Hamptons, a Victorian property and guest house in the Hudson Valley, a home and greenhouse through a Massachusetts winter, a classic Old San Juan home overlooking the ocean, and homes and animals during engagements elsewhere in the U.S. and abroad.

Some properties have required close attention to household systems and preventative maintenance. Others have involved landscapers, cleaners, pool companies and other regular service providers. I’ve prepared homes for an owner’s return, cared for gardens and vehicles, welcomed guests and renters, managed deliveries, and dealt with everything from ordinary maintenance to problems that needed an immediate response.

Five years of managing a private NYC residence year-round has been the most formative experience in my history as a property steward. I was responsible for the everyday well-being of the property and worked closely with the homeowner, contractors and tradespeople through routine upkeep, larger projects and recurring issues—including a basement prone to serious flooding during heavy storms.

Over time, I learned that good stewardship depends as much on judgment and follow-through as it does on knowing what needs to be done.

You have to notice when something has changed. Know what can wait and what can't. Find good people. Ask the right questions. Keep track of the details. Communicate with the homeowner without making them manage the situation themselves.

And when something needs to be handled, stay with it until the work is finished and nothing has been left lingering.

These are my principles your home is in my stead.

Why I Live in the Homes I Care For

There is something you can understand about a home by living in it that you simply can't get from stopping by once or twice a week.

You hear when something sounds different. You notice when a room feels unusually warm or cold, when water isn't draining as it normally does, when an appliance starts behaving differently, or when weather has affected something outside. You become familiar with the normal rhythm of the property—which makes the abnormal much easier to recognize.

I genuinely enjoy living this way.

I like experiencing different places as a temporary local rather than a visitor. I enjoy becoming part of the community and getting to know a neighborhood, finding its routines, spending time outdoors, and becoming familiar with a new corner of the world.

For me, living in the home is part of what makes this kind of care work so well. I get the experience of settling into a place and becoming part of its everyday rhythm, while you have someone there who is paying attention, learning the property, and taking responsibility for it in your absence. It’s an arrangement I genuinely enjoy—and one I take seriously.

A RESPONSIBLE PRESENCE

I'm mature, organized and highly self-directed. I enjoy having a routine, but I’m also comfortable changing course when something unexpected needs my attention. At home, I enjoy lounging with a good book or movie, cooking, and making my own herbal tea blends and cold-pressed juices.

As a home steward, simply put, I notice things. A sound I haven't heard before. Water somewhere it shouldn't be. A contractor whose work doesn't look quite finished. A plant that's beginning to struggle. Something outdoors that should probably be secured before the weather turns.

It's a kind of all-day functionality I have that can't be turned off.  And once something has my attention, I have a hard time leaving a loose end.

I'm proactive in researching something I don't know, asking questions, calling around, comparing options, and finding the right person when a job is beyond what I should handle myself. I communicate clearly with homeowners, but I also understand that part of my job is not creating more work for you.

I'm a non-smoker, have my own transportation and a clean driving record. My schedule is flexible, and when I'm caring for a home I spend a substantial amount of my time on the property.

LITTLE DETAILS GO THE LONGEST WAY

From New York to California, Puerto Rico to Peru, I’ve cared for homes in very different places and settings. Every property has had its own routines, quirks and ways of letting you know when something needs attention.

And often, it’s the little things that matter most. A hinge that has started to loosen. An appliance making a sound it didn't make last week. A small leak beneath a faucet. None of these things is particularly significant on its own—but noticed early and taken care of, they stay that way.

I pay attention to those details because they’re part of knowing a home. And when you’re away, I want you to know that someone is there noticing them, tending to them, and making sure the small things don't quietly become bigger ones.

TRUST, REFERENCES & VERIFICATION

Inviting someone to stay in your home requires trust. I'm happy to provide references for both my property management and home stewardship experience. I'm open to and encourage background checks and other verification requests.

My practice is for us to get to know one another before we put anything in writing — first through communications and a video call, and then ideally meeting at the property if our circumstances and schedules align.

It's these early stages of trust-building that often cement a happy and secure arrangment and create long-term relationships.

READY FOR THE NEXT STEP?

I'd love to learn about your home and how I can help care for it while you're away.

To get started, I'll ask you about you and your home and what services you're looking for.

From there, we'll schedule a time to have a chat or a video call, and/or an in-person meeting at the property.
